What Is a Micropub?
From Niche to Trend: The Growing Popularity of Micropubs
I’ve always said that Derby has a fabulous pub scene. The fact that Hill Farm has at least five GREAT pubs within a walkable distance says it all.
Today, I wanted to talk about micropubs because I’ve discovered we have four within a 10-minute drive. One of them is in Melbourne, which includes excellent walks around Calke Abbey. Win-win. But before we get any further into these small pubs with big experiences…
Let’s tell you exactly what a micropub is.
A micropub is a small, independent pub. It should only have one room and serve quality cask ales and craft beers from microbreweries (some brew their own). This intimate setting is all about good ale and community spirit - where conversation is king. Snacks to complement your beer are to hand, but you won’t find a permanent kitchen on site.
They are a far cry from your average commercialised pub chains and they are only getting more popular as people seek unique and personalised drinking experiences paired with authentic social spaces.

The Art of Craft Beer & 3 Reasons to Try a Micropub
Craft beer is typically produced by small, independent breweries (there are around 1,770 microbreweries in the UK). Microbreweries are all about innovation, quality, flavour, and traditional brewing methods.
These breweries often experiment with wild ingredients and techniques, resulting in diverse flavours and styles (a clear step away from mass-produced beers and lagers). Each brew tells a story, reflecting the brewer’s vision and the local culture.
If you’re still not convinced to try out a micropub, here are three final reasons:
🍻TASTE: There is always a new craft beer or cask ale to sample. Some never stock the same casks, so you’ll always find new tastes.
🍻 CULTURE: Pop-up events & community are central to the micropub ethos. They are spaces that nurture human connection - remember, conversation is king!
🍻 ONE-OF-KIND: You could end up anywhere, from a tiny one-roomed micropub located on a railway station platform, to a fully functioning microbrewery!

Experience the aromas of brewing and try an ale brewed on-site.
Toll Gate Brewery (a microbrewery, again, not technically a micropub but has small tap houses linked to it, enjoy their website!)

Two Local Pubs Screening the Paris Olympics 2024
Micropubs are TV free, celebrate conversation and craft beers.
So, it's safe to say catching the Olympics at any of the gorgeous little places we've listed will not be an option - save those for another outing! We called around our local pubs to find out who is showing the Olympics this summer.
Here are the two you need to head straight to:
The Melbourne Inn, 20 High St, Derby DE73 8GJ
It's a short 10-minute drive from Hill Farm, but there are some GREAT walks around Melbourne, and it's a beautiful village. You can do a circular walk around Calke Abbey (National Trust) and Ticknall. We've listed the walk here.
You can even include a loop to Toll Gate Brewery; this is their walking guide from Melbourne.
The Crewe and Harpur
It is one of the closest pubs to Hill Farm (and one of our faves). You can walk down the canal (left from Hill Farm) and enjoy a fabulous meal at this historic pub! We called them up to check, and even though the TV in the bar is not usually on, ask at the bar, and they'll put the Olympics on for you!
Find out more about the pub here.
